NEW artwork is on display at the Arthur Wharton Foundation in Darlington.

Founder of the foundation, Shaun Campbell, had the idea and it became a reality very quickly with help from Danny Howes and Illumination Wall Art.

2022 marks the 135th anniversary since Darlington Football Club, with Arthur Wharton, won the Cleveland Challenge Cup and Arthur equalled his world record in the AAA Athletics Championships for the 100 yard sprint, winning the Prince Hassan Pacha Cup for the second time, in 1887.

Shaun said: “This year is a really important year for the foundation because it’s the 135th anniversary of when Arthur Wharton won the two cups that he’s famously photographed with.

“These two cups will be brought to Darlington this year. It’s extraordinary to know that 135 years ago, running for Darlington, Arthur Wharton equalled his own world record for the 100 yards sprint, and also Darlington won the Cleveland Challenge Cup, so the painting of the Quakers Crest is in tribute to that.”

The foundation was founded by Shaun who decided to make it his mission to spread the word of Arthur Wharton, a Ghanaian immigrant who made history as Darlington Football Club’s goalkeeper.

The painting appeared on Widdowfield Road in Darlington on Saturday January 29, beside the mural of Arthur.
