Numerous properties in the North East remain disconnected from the power network following the disruption brought by Storms Malik and Corrie over the weekend, as Northern Powergrid reveal how many houses are still left in darkness.

Across the UK, 80,000 homes were impacted by power shortages after North England and Scotland was battered by high winds during the last three days, which led to felled trees, downed power cables and damaged property.

In the days that have followed, Northern Powergrid has attempted to reconnect the affected homes – including working overnight to bring electricity and heating back to more rural communities.

Following three days of working on downed power lines and impacted connections, Northern Powergrid has now confirmed that 99.9 per cent of the network is back up and running, with just 61 properties needing to be restored.

Addresses in DL2, DL12, DL13, DH7 and several NE postcodes are still affected – with the Northern Powergrid interactive map showing the extent and coverage of the 61 houses that still need to be worked on.

Andy Bilclough, director of field operations at the utility company, said: “Our teams have got through a phenomenal amount of work today, which includes reconnecting around 17,000 customers that were impacted by Storm Corrie, and they’re still out there now.

Here's the locations of the final 61 properties:

“Almost all of the work we have left to do is a blend of repair work that we discovered when we got to site, some difficult site conditions that meant we couldn’t complete the work today or where we would have needed access to the property during the night but have agreed with the customer to complete the restoration tomorrow.”

According to Northern Powergrid, “All the work is scheduled and allocated to teams who are ready to complete the work tomorrow.

“We understand that it is frustrating to have been without power for this length of time – we appreciate the continued patience of our customers.

“We are also grateful to the fantastic teams of people who have worked tirelessly to restore supplies to more than 80,000 customers and to support all those affected.”
