TELLY bosses have explained why two further episodes of Vera did not air at the weekend as the show appeared to be replaced by a new series.

Viewers were left "disappointed" to see DCI Vera Stanhope fail to return to their screens on Sunday night as ITV's Trigger Point aired in its place.

The show, which is now in its eleventh series, had returned just weeks ago with two explosive episodes continuing on from Summer.

But viewers were left at a loss as they feared the popular crime series had been replaced or postponed by the channel.

Now, ITV have confirmed why the show did not air, despite the promise of two further episodes from the current series.

A spokesperson told The Northern Echo that despite reports, there haven't been any delays with post-production and the remaining episodes have in fact been held so they can reach the "best possible audience."

As that was confirmed, Brenda Blethyn herself took to social media to confirm that there are in fact two more episodes waiting to be shown - and they are filming even more.

She tweeted: "There are two episodes still to be shown and we start filming four more in March. Yaaaaaay!."

Her tweet caught the eye of hundreds of excited fans as they described the promise of more episodes as "excellent" and "fantastic."

One person said: "Fantastic news there's four more to be filmed! I might actually catch some scenes big filmed this time. Always miss them."

The show saw huge success as it aired series 11 back in Summer with scenes filmed across the North East including in County Durham, Teesside and Wearside.

The first episode proved so successful that members of the public started visiting filming locations to re-enact scenes, barely 24 hours after the show had aired.

An exact date for the two remaining episodes of the current series is yet to be confirmed.
