A MAN spared an immediate prison sentence for violence is now behind bars after failing to comply with alternative court orders.

Nathan Reece Haslam received a 14-month sentence, suspended for two years, at Durham Crown Court last June, after admitting unlawful wounding and affray.

He was also ordered to comply with a four-month, 8pm to 8am, electronically-monitored home curfew.

The sentence arose from an assault on a man left with a fractured collar bone and a cut to the eyebrow, in Willington, on December 8, 2019.

At the same hearing in June, a 22-year-old co-accused, from Ushaw Moor, received a ten-month suspended sentence, also for unlawful wounding and affray, while a further accomplice, a 27-year-old Willington woman, received a two-year community order, for affray.

But Haslam, now 23, of Commercial Street, Willington, was back before the court after admitting breaching court orders.

Chris Morrison, for the Crown, said following problems with the curfew it was replaced with 40-hours’ unpaid work requirement, at the court, in September.

But Mr Morrison said Haslam failed to provide reasons for non-attendance on scheduled unpaid work days, on November 12 and December 9, and blamed Covid for failing to attend on December 13 and 20, but provided no medical evidence.

Jonathan Gittins, for Haslam, told the court the defendant had been receiving threats from a man who lived in the vicinity of where he was to attend the probation appointments, which was one reason for failing to turn up.

Judge James Adkin told Haslam it was, “disappointing” to find him back before the court for failing to comply with the sentence, but said he made it, “abundantly clear” what would happen if the failed to comply with the order.

“You’ve reached the end of the road and the guidelines suggest activation of the order for a number of low-level non-compliance breaches.”

Imposing 12-months of the original sentence, to be served immediately, Judge Adkin revoked the community order.
