MOTORISTS are being warned that one of the main routes out of Durham will be subject to 11 weeks of works whilst the city's ageing gas pipes are replaced.
Northern Gas Networks, the gas distributor for the North of England, has said it will carry out essential upgrade work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers around Framwelgate Peth, in Durham city centre.
The ageing metal pipework is being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now, while getting the network ready to transport alternative green fuels such as hydrogen in the future.
The work will start on Thursday, February 3 on Framwelgate Peth and will take around 11 weeks to complete, having been planned in close collaboration with Durham County Council.
In order to protect engineers and members of the public, the east-bound lane of Framwelgate Peth heading out of the city centre will be reduced to a single lane throughout the project.
The lane closure is likely to impact traffic and journey times, especially during key commuting hours, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel.
Signs will be displayed for motorists before and during the works.
While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.
Extra safety precautions remain in place to keep everyone safe while we continue to live with Covid-19.
Shaun Williams, site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Durham.
“NGN is continuing to carry out essential services while following strict Government guidelines for safe distance working and observing health and safety guidance during the current restrictions in England.
“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
For further information about the work please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800-0407766 or email customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800-111999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
