WORK has started on a large housing estate to the north of Darlington.

The houses are being built on land at Berrymead Farm, to the north of Burtree Lane.

The development will include 370 homes and a new primary school.

Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes are working together to deliver a total of 1,235 houses at the site in Darlington and another in Yarm Back Lane, Stockton.

The companies have marked the start of work on the developments.

Jackie Coulthard, Managing Director for Taylor Wimpey North Yorkshire, said: “We’re delighted to have put the first spades in the ground for these two major new sites.

"As well as providing high quality homes for local people, our developments will feature a range of facilities for new residents and the existing community to make use of, including land for a new primary school in Darlington.

“Ecological enhancement and sustainability features are also vital to our proposals, with protection of existing wildlife a key priority.”

Taylor Wimpey will be building 124 of the homes in Darlington, offering a range of two, three and four bedroom homes, of which 20 per cent will be classed as affordable housing.

Steven Ball, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey North Yorkshire, added: “Demand for new build homes continues to be high across County Durham and Teesside, so we’re really looking forward to launching these two new sites later this year.

“There are many benefits to buying a new build property, from increased energy efficiency to the chance to customise homes through our options scheme. I’d urge anyone interested in finding out more to contact our sales teams and get the opportunity to have the pick of the first plots.”

Sean Taylor, Managing Director for Persimmon Homes Teesside added: “It is great to see these important, long-awaited developments getting underway, providing much-needed quality homes for the local community. This project is being delivered by a strong partnership between Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey, working together to offer an excellent choice of homes suitable for first time buyers and families alike.

“In addition to the housing developments, we are making a significant investment in delivering improvements to the local highway infrastructure which involves us working closely with Stockton Borough Council Highways, which will also bring significant benefits to the region.”

Taylor Wimpey is due to launch Hartburn Grange in Yarm Back Lane, Stockton on Tees, and Berrymead Gardens in Beaumont Hill, Darlington, in early 2022.
