A CRIMINAL investigation is underway after reports two women were stabbed in a pub beer garden late on New Year’s Day.
Emergency services were called The Grand Electric Hall in Spennymoor yesterday evening.
It is understood the alarm was raised at around 8pm after a woman carried out an attack at the JD Wetherpoon bar on Cheapside.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “A female entered the pub’s beer garden from the street and approached a lady and attacked her with a sharp object.
“On her way out of the garden she then attacked another lady, also with the same object.
“The attacker then ran off.
“Police and paramedics were called and both of the victims were treated for their injuries at the pub.”
The incident happened at The Grand Electric Hall in Spennymoor
The pub, a former cinema that was converted into a bingo hall in the 1960s, was closed last night as inquiries began to take place but has since reopened this morning.
Mr Gershon said: “The police sealed off the beer garden and also asked for the pub to close.
“The pub reopened as usual this morning.
“Wetherspoon has handed over all CCTV footage to the police and will assist them in any way possible.
“This was a distressing incident for staff and customers at the pub.”
The condition of the victims is not known and police have not said if any arrests have been made at this stage.
Durham Constabulary has been contacted for comment.
A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 7.55pm and we dispatched one paramedic ambulance crew and also a doctor.
"We treated two patients at the scene and one was taken to hospital."
