A NEW book looking back at life in the Stockton-on-Tees area in the transformative and turbulent 1970s and 1980s has proven to be a Christmas best-seller.
Memories of Stockton-on-Tees in the 1970s and 1980s by historian Dr Tosh Warwick explores a range of topics from the era including changes to Stockton High Street, industry along the Tees, culture and heritage, sporting life, celebrations and famous visitors.
The book features over 200 photographs and dozens of community contributions including memories of the Queen’s visit in 1977, Christmas throughout the years, Margaret Thatcher’s ‘Walk in the Wilderness’, the 150th anniversary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and market life.
Drawing on the extensive collections of Teesside Archives, Preston Park Museum, Middlesbrough and Stockton Borough Libraries and a number of private collections, many of the images featured are published for the first time in the book.

The latest link up with Peter Hinton Design, Dr Warwick’s latest book has already sold over 300 copies through online orders alone and will soon be available in outlets across Teesside, including the Rediscover Stockton venue on Stockton High Street and local bookstores.
Dr Warwick said: “Stockton-on-Tees and the surrounding areas have a rich history and a special place in many people’s hearts.
"The 1970s and 1980s are decades that tend not to feature prominently in history books of the area.
"Yet for many this is the era of most interest to them as the time associated with their childhood, leisure and working life.
“The response to Memories of Stockton-on-Tees in the 1970s and 1980s has been phenomenal.
"It has been great to hear so much positive feedback, stories of how the book has brought back many fond memories and how many have purchased it as a gift for Christmas.
"The book wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the fantastic contributions of the local community and I hope it helps bring some Christmas cheer in these difficult times.”
