PEOPLE in County Durham are urged to think again if they are considering buying an off-road bike, quad or e-scooter for Christmas.

Durham Police issued a warning about the legal and financial pitfalls of owning such vehicles which need insurance, MOT and tax and driving licence and are illegal if ridden on footpaths, roads and other public places.

Offenders could get a criminal record, £300 fine, six points on their licence and have the vehicle confiscated.

Durham Constabulary’s Roads Policing Inspector, Kevin Salter, said: “While many people might be considering buying an off-road bike for their child this Christmas, they often don’t realise that they can only be ridden legally on private land with the permission of the landowner.

“Off road bikes and quads are a problem across County Durham and Darlington and cause a nuisance in the communities.

“Off road bikes and quads are not toys, they are vehicles.

"So while we understand that these and e-scooters are tempting options for Christmas presents this year, we want to make it clear they are not toys and you have to make sure you know how and where to use them safely.”

Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen added: “I am proud to help launch this vital Christmas campaign for Operation Endurance asking parents to think before they buy new wheels for their children this Christmas.”
