AN MP has hit out at a "scumbag" who posted excrement through the letterbox of his office in Darlington.

Peter Gibson, MP for Darlington, said it happened overnight and described the person responsible as a "disgrace".

A member of his staff confirmed this morning she had contacted police after making the discovery on her arrival at work and was arranging additional security.

CCTV footage from the office in Duke Street has been passed to police.

Mr Gibson said: "Sadly my team have arrived at work this morning to do as they do every day and help the people of Darlington with problems but instead of being able to get on with their work they are having to clean up the excrement that some scumbag has posted through our letterbox.

"What an appalling scum bag thing to do.

"Disagree with me by all means, challenge my views but when you resort to this behaviour you illustrate what a disgrace you are.

"Rest assured the police have been informed and CCTV footage has been passed to police."

A Durham Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called shortly after 9am this morning (December 15) to reports of criminal damage at a premises on Duke Street.

"An investigation is currently ongoing and CCTV is being reviewed."
