One of the most recent reviews describes: "Outstanding food and hospitality that is unmatched in the north east!"

Another Tripadvisor reviewer said: "Visited here again last night, we tend to come at least once a month now as we are locals and we just love the food and atmosphere.

"Adnam, his Mum and the rest of the team make you feel so welcome and it always good to catch up with them when we visit, this is what makes good customer service and makes us want to keep coming back. We always have our usual table in the corner which we like.

"I had the Masala Fish followed by a Lamb Pathia which was spiced to my requirements (another bonus of this restaurant, they listen to your requests and your tastings and adjust accordingly) - we had a Naan and some Bombay potatoes and it was just enough."

Specialities, according to Tripadvisor reviews, include the Lamb Balti, samosas, Paneer Tikka, chicken Jalfrezi and more.

One reviewer told Tripadvisor: "Fantastic food cooked to a very high standard sublime flavours and exceptional quality one of the best Asian meals I have ever eaten . The service friendly and attentive would highly recommend Viraj must be one of the best restaurants in the North East."

Akbar the Great

Almost 450 reviews on Tripadvisor describe the culinary experience at Akbar the Great as "excellent".

With vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, this is a great place for groups with an array of dietary needs.

One happy customer said: "We had a range of different main courses and opted for the super sizzler to start with. The service was brilliant and there was nothing which was too much hassle for the chef. It was so good that we have already booked ourselves in for christmas day! Would highly recommend."

One reviewer said: "We went tonight and the food, service and speed was nothing short of perfect. Had all of our food piping hot and all courses served and paid for within an hour.

"We were offered a complimentary drink in the bar after which was a fantastic touch and shows they actually care.

"Conversation with the staff was easy going and they were incredibly attentive.

"The dishes we had were delicious. Portions were great. Naan was more than enough to share, as was the rice.

"All in all, as first time eaters here. We can’t wait to return. The menu is huge and can’t wait to try something new."

Sunarga Indian Restaurant

One Durham resident told Tripadvisor: "It quite honestly cannot be beaten for quality snd taste of good or service, anywhere in the North East. If you want the best Indian food, make a special trip. It is so worth it!"
