DARLINGTON Mayor Cyndi Hughes visited Cummins on Yarm Road to applaud the company for its Terra Carta Seal, recently awarded by HRH Prince Charles for commitment to a sustainable future.
“Being American, Cyndi was also interested in building a relationship with an American company in the town,” said Marketing Communications Director Steve Nendick.
“We took her through a presentation covering the Cummins Planet 2050 sustainability initiatives including zero waste to landfill and the recent award from the government for developing hydrogen powered engines on site. “
Cllr Hughes told BUSINESSiQ: “Cummins is now the largest employer in Darlington, so I made my visit to congratulate the company on its recognised commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation—and that’s really saying something when a company built on Diesel engines is applauded for its climate change aspirations.
“There’s been a £20m investment in the Darlington plant over the past few years with even more to come, great news for local young people studying STEM subjects as well as finance, marketing, you name it...
“I was delighted to visit this global leader right on our doorstep.”
She was also shown examples of the recent £20million investment in the site across the offices, shop floor areas and production test facilities.

Cummins has recruited 500 people since the start of the pandemic, most to cover the increase in engine demand, and there are more than 70 open positions available at the moment.
Cllr Hughes also heard about the global reach of Cummins and how this impacts the work done on site, as well as the community focus including developing STEM skills in the region’s schools and spotlighting opportunities for women in engineering.
The Terra Carta Seal is part of the The Prince of Wales’ sustainable markets initiative, aimed at establishing a global forum for industries to restructure their operations in a way that protects the world’s natural resources.
Speaking recently at COP26, Prince Charles said: “The Terra Carta Seal recognises those organisations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts nature, people and the planet at the heart of the economy.”
