SNOW has fallen in parts of the region as stormy conditions are expected throughout this evening and into tomorrow.

High parts of County Durham have seen temperatures plummet, bringing with it a heavy flurry of snow and icy conditions.

It comes as multiple weather warnings are in place across the North East and North Yorkshire as Storm Barra makes landfall.

The AA has issued a warning to all drivers in the Bowes area, including those using the A66, to take extra care as conditions worsen.

In an update at 12.39pm, it said: "Strong winds and snow on A66 between A685 (Brough) and A67 (Bowes).

"The road remains open, however extra care is advised."

Durham County Council said it had been gritting roads in parts of the area since 12pm today with workers on standby for a number of routes.

On social media, it reminded residents to look after one another as temperatures continue to fall amid Storm Barra.

It said: "Please take care and look out for family and neighbours. Anyone who is aware of an older or vulnerable person who needs help can contact our customer services team on 03000 26 0000."

According to forecasters, areas to the west of Teesdale, Leyburn in North Yorkshire, Allendale in Northumberland are set to be hit by snow.

The Met Office warns of travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers, delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

Meanwhile, it has warned there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
