SAUSAGE roll, pizza slice and breakfast fans will be able to get their Greggs without leaving the car as it has named the location of its first drive-thru in County Durham.

The Newcastle-based bakery chain has confirmed it will open a stand-alone drive-thru at the Integra 61 Industrial Estate, near Bowburn, in Durham next year.

The site is already home to the huge Amazon 'MME2' warehouse, which opened last year and employs more than 1,000 permanent staff and hundreds of seasonal workers.

Revealing the details, Greggs said the new site will sit opposite the Costa Coffee drive-thru, which opened for the first time back in December last year.

It follows on from the opening of Greggs' first-ever drive-thru in the North East, a site at Sandy Lane in Newcastle, back in 2019.

Roisin Currie, Retail and Property Director for Greggs, said: “Our new drive-thru site in County Durham will provide customers with a modern and convenient new place to experience all their Greggs favourites on-the-go.”

In partnership with developer, Citrus Durham, work on the unit is expected to begin shortly with a target opening date of early 2022.

David Cullingford, Project Lead for Integra 61 and Citrus Durham, said: “Since we opened Costa Coffee, the roadside element of Integra 61 is really taking shape and we are delighted to be welcoming Greggs to the scheme.

"With the high volume of Amazon workers, drive-thru customers and the homeowners all bringing life to Integra 61, we are excited to be discussing options with a number of parties for the remaining widespread opportunities from industrial units to trade counter units and showrooms in addition to a nursery and hotel.”

Integra 61 has been described as the largest logistics and manufacturing "opportunity" in the North East in a generation, with plots of land up to 500,000 sq ft in size.

Bosses say the 205-acre site has the potential to create 4,000 jobs and add £2 billion to the regional economy over the next 10 years.

Future plans include 300 new homes, a 70-bed hotel, family pub/restaurant, vehicle dealerships and a number of trade counter and retail units.

Last month, some of those plans were revealed in further detail as outline planning permission for 100 new homes was approved.
