A RAPIST who attacked a teenage girl has been jailed for eight years.

Stephen Gent, from Darlington, put the girl through the ordeal of a trial after denying the offence.

But a jury sitting at Teesside Crown Court found the 41-year-old guilty trial last week.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, the girl said Gent’s actions had ruined her life, and left her scared to leave her house alone.

Investigative officer Heidi Weir and Detective Constable Jacqui Robinson, from Darlington’s Safeguarding Team, led the police investigation.

Heidi said: “The victim in this case has shown enormous strength throughout the investigation.

"I am so proud that on the day of giving evidence she was able to face her abuser in the witness box and tell the jury what he did.

"I believe that the bravery shown will assist her in her recovery and healing process.”

Anyone who is suffering sexual abuse should come forward and report it to police – call 101, or 999 in an emergency.
