A TEESPORT power plant fire will be managed by a controlled burn, the fire service has said, after it broke out on Monday.

MGT confirmed that the issue with smouldering in one of their silos will be managed via a controlled burn which will take several days and will be continually monitored.

Cleveland Fire Brigade remain on site as protective stand-by and a multi-agency strategic group is managing the incident.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: "A water shield has been put up around the silo to minimise the impact of smoke to nearby residents and businesses and we expect to see a significant reduction of smoke and odour over the next few hours and days.

"We advise all residents and businesses in the area to keep doors and windows closed and minimise time spent outside whilst smoke and odour remain in the area.  If windows are closed in workplaces to remain Covid-19 secure businesses should be mindful of the importance of social distancing and consider wearing face masks in communal areas as closed windows will reduce the benefits of ventilation.

"Workplaces should consider alternatives such as working remotely if other mitigations are not possible. If you have a pre-existing health condition such as asthma carry your medication and if you feel unwell seek medical advice either from NHS 111 or calling your GP."
