The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost, our thoughts go out to the man’s family at this devastating time. We will continue to offer them any support they need.

“We are committed to getting them the answers they deserve – and we have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and how it came to happen.

“I am today appealing for anybody who was in the area at the time and believes they saw what happened – or anyone with information – to come forward.

“We are equally keen to hear from anybody who was in the Ryton area between 5.30pm and 6pm last night and who saw a gold-coloured Skoda travelling. If you have dashcam footage that may assist our investigation, please let us know.”
