STRIKING murals have been created by selfless young volunteers near a memorial bar.

Students at Stockton Riverside College completed the remembrance themed works on a container near The Last Post, in Thornaby.

The completed work was officially unveiled last week by landlady Julie Cooper alongside Thornaby Mayor Cllr Steve Walmsley.

The murals cover two important topics, Ms Cooper said: “On one side they’ve done something to remember our fallen for Remembrance Sunday – and then on the other side they’ve covered mental health.

“You need to see it – it’s absolutely fantastic. There are a lot of mental health issues out there at the moment.

“They’ve done a fabulous job.

“They stayed with us for a week in the cold – sometimes it was raining but they cracked on, did it and they were dead proud when they’d finished it as well.”

Youngsters from the Prince’s Trust TEAM programme helped create the work off Cranworth Street as part of a 12 week employability scheme.

Chris Barnes, team leader for the Prince’s Trust, said students went out into the community as part of one of its modules to improve teamwork skills and change perceptions for young people.

He added: “I’m ex-military myself so it’s something close to my heart.

“The guys came up with the idea to tie in with current events on mental health but also Remembrance Day coming up, let’s approach the Don Bar and see what we can do.”

Mr Barnes said he was very proud of what the team has achieved.
