A KIDS' club has been given a green-fingered makeover by a gardening wizard.

Mike Heagney called in at the Kids Kabin in Grove Hill, Middlesbrough, as part of an annual charity drive.

He was joined by Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston and local ward Councillor Joan McTigue at the Laurel Avenue club.

The Kids Kabin lays on after-school and holiday activities and creative workshops for local children, and a flourishing garden will help them learn more about nature and the great outdoors.

Launched in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1994, Kids Kabin takes mobile trailer workshops into disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Newcastle and Middlesbrough and runs street pottery, cookery, woodwork and bike repair workshops for children.

Children aged eight to 13 take part in practical, hands-on activities, learning new skills, boosting their self-confidence, and helping them to play active and positive roles in their community.

Every year Mr Heagney, opens up the grounds of his family home to the public for charity.

Project Manager Sue McBride said: "Mike's chosen Kids Kabin as his charity for the last two years, and the support has been absolutely brilliant.

"He's helped us create a really nice looking garden and the kids are absolutely over the moon with it."

Longlands & Beechwood Councillor Joan McTigue said: "I've known Mike for many years, and he's always helped me out with guidance on plants and given me seeds for my own garden.

"His garden makeover for the Kids Kabin is such a generous gesture, and I know that everyone involved is absolutely delighted with it."

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: "The Kids Kabin is already an amazing success in the local community, and one that's really loved by kids and parents alike.

"This fantastic garden makeover just adds another dimension to it, so huge thanks to Mike for being so generous with his time and energy - it really will make a big difference to so many young lives."
