A NORTH EAST area has the second highest Covid rates across the entire country, figures made available last night have revealed.

Northern Echo analysis of latest Public Health figures show the North Tyneside area of the region ranks second for infections in England and Wales.

It comes as figures also show five out of 14 areas in the region have seen a rise in the past week, while the remaining have seen the number of new cases fall.

North Tyneside, which includes towns such as North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, has seen infections rise to 755.5 cases per 100,000 people.

The Northern Echo:

The figures, which show the cases in the week to October 30, compared with the week before, show that Vale of Glamorgan has the country's highest rates with 767.2.

The Office for National Statistics has today said that around one in 50 people in private homes in England tested positive for Covid in the past week.

The ONS said that this has remained unchanged from the previous week, with the one in 50 being the equivalent of about 1.1 million.

It went on to say that the figures were roughly the same as at the peak of the second wave in early January.

Throughout the easing of restrictions, local authorities – including North Tyneside Council - have continued to urge people to come forward to get their jabs.

But to give you the view in your area, The Northern Echo has put together a list of the current Covid case rates in the region as per the Government dashboard.
