TEESSIDERS and other people in the region have reacted to the announcement that a deal was struck for a major Saudi investment of nearly one billion pounds into SABIC.

The deal will create and safeguard hundreds of jobs.

The deal, secured by Saudi Aramco, will see SABIC’s parent company inject £850million into the Wilton business ending months of uncertainty for thousands of workers and those in the firms supply chain.

One person said: "Thank you from the many Newcastle United supporters in this area. Congratulations on the takeover and keeping your promise to spread this partnership to the whole region.

"Sadly many people in this area have no idea of your already massive investment in our industry here."

Another said: "Good news for the workers knowing their jobs are saved."

However one person said: "Well, well, well. So much for the anti-Saudi banners displayed during the Boro game at the weekend, you're not so 'anti' now are you.

"Let's face it before and during the takeover of NUFC taking place they'd said they would be investing in not only the city centre and industries on the Tyne but also in Teesside as well so don't thank you mayor or MPs for this because it wouldn't have happened without the takeover being completed.

"Let's hope for more investment and less of this nonsense with the flag waving. If you have any issues, contact the owners because they said when the takeover happened they're more than happy to discuss any concerns people may have."

Politicans also took to Twitter after the announcement last night.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "Fantastic to see nearly £1 billion invested in SABIC's Teesside facility, creating and safeguarding 1,000 jobs. It's a huge vote of confidence in the UK's chemicals and processing industry, which is pioneering innovation in clean, green technology."

Business minister Kwasi Kwarteng said: "Major investment announced on Teesside tonight from SABIC. Fantastic news for Britain’s chemical sector + for North East jobs I know Gerry Grimstone and Mayor Ben Houchen have been working tirelessly to secure this commitment."
