PLANS have been submitted to Darlington Borough Council by St George’s Medical Practice to support a detailed planning application for the development of a new medical practice on Yarm Road, Middleton St George.
The practice is currently operating out of temporary accommodation on the site. As part of the planning approval for this modular building, the vehicular entrance, car parking and associated footpaths, lighting, cycle and waste storage were all constructed with the intention to reuse all elements as part of a future, permanent building.
The building is orientated on a NE/SW axis to relate to the site boundaries sits parallel to the existing access road to the Middleton Hall Retirement Village. The existing mature trees to the east and the south of the site provide solar shading and privacy for the clinical rooms.
The massing comprises of two single-storey pitched-roof forms with glazed connections between the two forms. The building is domestic in scale and as such will sit comfortably within its surroundings and neighbouring housing developments.
The proposed new building will provide approx. 550m2 of accommodation and will provide the following:
• five consulting/ examination rooms
• two treatment rooms
• clean and dirty utilities
• health promotion room
• administration and support space
The main entrance is situated between the two building forms within a glazed connection which leads straight into the reception area with visual links through to the internal courtyard beyond. This visually reduces the scale of the two buildings enhancing their character and appearance whilst drawing you towards the entrance on arrival.
The new building has a contemporary agricultural appearance lending itself to its surroundings.
The mature trees and hedgerow on the south and eastern boundaries of the site will be retained, preserving the ecological and visual benefit to the site.
Improvement works to the public highway including new footways linking to the bus stops, dropped kerbs, tactile paving and bus platforms where implemented.
