EXTRA police patrols in a County Durham village led to a car being stopped in connection with drugs offences and a haul of alcohol being seized from youths.

Plain clothed officers joined uniformed police in Shotton Colliery for a night of action on Friday - carrying out additional patrols and engaging with members of the community.

The Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team said close to 20 containers of alcohol were seized from a number of youths.

A police spokesperson said: “They were returned home to parents and Safeguarding referrals submitted accordingly.”

Officers also stopped a vehicle and searched it for drugs.

The spokesperson said: “A number of drug related items were located and seized including snap bags and scales.

“Further enquiries are currently ongoing by the team.”

A community resolution was completed with four youths following the report of a low-level crime to local beat officers.

Officers also attended the Community Centre where they spoke to members of the community at length about what mattered to them most and how we can work together to address these issues moving forward.

“We will continue to pay attention to the area and look to plan further operations over the coming weeks,” the spokesperson added.
