TEESSIDE International Airport is to remain closed this weekend after a plane crash.

A light aircraft crashed this morning (Saturday) after it was reported it 'lose power'.

The Airport has issued an update, urging customers not to contact Loganair - saying theyr will be contacted.

A spokesperson for Teesside Airport said: “Following an incident involving a light aircraft this morning (Saturday), we will remain closed for the weekend so the Air Accident Investigation Branch can carry out a thorough investigation. We are hopeful the airport will reopen on Monday 27 September.

“As a result of this closure, Loganair will be contacting customers affected with details on how to claim a full refund or rebook an alternative date. They request that customers do not phone Loganair at this time.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank all of our passengers who have been very understanding today. All of our thoughts and prayers are with the three people onboard at the time of the incident and their families.”

The incident happened at around 9.40am.

Three people were taken to hospital - the pilot and two passengers.

The North East Amulance Service said one person who was airlifted by the Air Ambulance had 'serious injuries'.

Police and the fire service also attended the scene.

Eyewitnesses said they heard the engine cut out then an 'almighty bang'.

Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor said his thoughts and prayers were with the three people onboard.
