PEOPLE who throw missiles at cars from a town centre bridge are putting lives at risk and could end up with a criminal record, police have warned.

Residents of Newton Aycliffe contacted The Northern Echo to complain about antisocial behaviour in the area of the town’s Blue Bridge.

They reported a number of incidents in recent weeks when stones and other objects had been thrown, by people standing the bridge, at vehicles travelling under the bridge on St Cuthbert’s Way.

Motorists said they feared damage being caused to vehicles and the danger it poses to drivers and passengers if it resulted in a crash.

Sergeant Andy Boyd, of Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This is unacceptable and selfish behaviour which can put people at risk of serious injury and it will not be tolerated.

“I would ask those thinking it is funny to engage in this activity to ask themselves how they would feel if they caused a serious accident involving one of their loved ones and to think twice before someone gets hurt.

“Anyone caught putting others’ lives at risk with this type of behaviour will be dealt with and could face having a criminal record – don’t let this be you.

“I would also appeal to the community to work with us in reporting any incidents like this with as much information as they can.”
