A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and currently remains in police custody.
Officers believe a biker was waiting at the red light at the junction when the assault took place and so may hold information which could be vital to the investigation.
Detectives from Scarborough Criminal Investigation Department have now launched an appeal to trace the motorcyclist.
He was riding a red sports-style motorbike and was wearing a blue and black jacket with a white logo and stripe on the back and a distinctive white helmet with a red stripe down the middle.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "If this was you, or you recognise the description of the rider - please contact our Force Control Room on 101 quoting reference 12210202985.
"Officers are also keen to speak to any witnesses or drivers who were in the area at the time of the incident - especially anyone who may have captured dash cam footage.
"Again, please contact our Force Control Room on 101 and pass the information on."
