THE biggest half marathon in the world took place yesterday in Newcastle.
After having to miss a year due to Covid the Great North Run celebrated its 40th anniversary with a change to the route.
The 13.1 miles started near its usual route on the Central Motorway near the Town Moor in Newcastle over the Tyne Bridge then through Gateshead before heading back along the Felling bypass over the Tyne Bridge again and through Newcastle City Centre, finishing on the Great North Road.

Laura Nolan, one of our reporters, ran the race for the first time.
She said: “I was so nervous before the race began. To be honest I had done minimal training, but had a place through a charity – Asthma UK – back before the lockdown, so I knew I had to complete it.
“Nerves were soon turned to excitement and honestly I loved every second of it.
“The atmosphere was absolutely amazing, despite Covid the spectators honestly kept me going throughout the more tougher miles and I don’t think I could have completed it without everyone cheering me on.
“I managed to complete it in two hours, 50 minutes, which I am really chuffed at and can’t wait to do my next Great North Run.
“Well done to everyone who completed it, the organisers, volunteers, everyone who sponsored me and of course spectators.”
