WHITBY offers a lot to visitors and one of those things is excellent food, its many restaurants and cafés, as well as fish and chip shops – but which places are the best in the seaside town?

Looking at the top ten places to eat in Whitby demonstrates the range of cuisine on offer to visitors.

From Mexican fast food to Italian cuisine these restaurants are all top of their game and have secured the highest reviews across the board.

Price ranges will also vary across this list with some offering a fine dining experience and some offering quick bites for those on the go.

With the weather set to be a bit brighter this weekend and the temperature staying above 20c, this could be a great time to get out and about for a meal.

  1. Ditto Restaurant, Skinner Street, Whitby

The Northern Echo:

According to TripAdvisor, Ditto offers people a “contemporary and exciting menu cooked to the highest standard.” And for a fair price at that.

With prices ranging from £7 to £30, this restaurant offers local British cuisine while using all their “ best ingredients which are of the finest quality and sourced from the best local suppliers.”

The venue describes itself as a “small, intimate and relaxing restaurant with seating for up to 20.”

Receiving a TripAdvisor 2021 award and 1,084 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 1,203, this restaurant is much loved by many.

One person said: “We booked here several weeks in advance and fortunately got a table.

“Everything was perfect, the food was amazing, likewise the staff, and we could not have chosen better.

“Definitely deserves all the accolades it has received and will definitely be back next time we are in the area. Many thanks for everything.”

  1. Al Taco, Baxtergate, Whitby

The Northern Echo:

Offering Mexican fast food for a very fair price, this restaurant is sure to win the hearts of all those taco lovers out there.

With prices ranging from £5 to £10, this venue offers great home-cooked food for an excellent value.

Receiving five stars on all aspects such as food, service and value, as well as receiving a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, the business is very highly rated.

Al Taco has received 223 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a possible 249 reviews altogether.

One person said: “We had food here on Friday night and were blown away. The seating area is small but super cosy and the staff made us feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door.

“Food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced.”

  1. The Willow Branch, Golden Lion Bank, Whitby

Picking up a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, The Willow Branch is a classic British Café, offering some lovely cakes and quick bites.

Another business with rave reviews, has received 273 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 313 reviews altogether.

One person said: “My daughter and I had afternoon tea here, having visited before on previous visits in 2018/19.

“The food was fabulous, everything made fresh. The cakes were moist and delicious and the lemon posset was a perfect addition. Scones were lovely.

“A couple came in asking for anything gluten-free (it seemed like they were struggling to find lunch) they were very pleased to be accommodated with options too.

“Top quality selection of teas, great coffee, friendly staff and perfectly clean - all in a welcoming and cosy environment. This place is a total gem and we will be back, thank you.”

  1. Rusty Shears, Silver Street, Whitby

According to TripAdvisor Rusty Shears has become a “must visit venue when coming to Whitby.”

The venue “boasts homemade cakes and pastries, specifically teas, coffees and over 150 gins,” so you will definitely be spoilt for choice.

With prices ranging from £2 to £11 you can’t argue that the business also offers great value for money as well.

The business says they also have a “superb sheltered courtyard where guests can while away the hours chatting and people watching.”

Picking up a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers Choice Award and receiving 1,169 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 1,440 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Had a leisurely brunch in the beautiful courtyard. Fabulous eggs royale, granola and avocado smash.

“All delicious, plus the quality of the drinks is superb, particularly the speciality teas. Highly recommended.”

  1. Cranberry Swamp, Skinner Street, Whitby

With prices ranging from £2 to £10, we are already off to a great start with Cranberry Swamp.

The restaurant has received five stars in food, and four-and-a-half stars in service and value, as well as picking up a TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award.

Picking up 412 “excellent” five-star reviews, the place is also highly rated in general.

One person said: “We came here as it had excellent reviews, and catered for Gluten Free and Vegetarian diets.

“There was a great selection and the waitress was lovely and warm. We ordered the Butternut squash and chickpea muffin in a GF bun with sweet potato fries and the nachos with chilli beans and cheese.

“Portion sizes were spot on and it was all delicious. The iced teas were a treat too. I'd highly recommend coming here being a little up from the front it's quieter. There was also some great Art inside!”

  1. Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash, Church Street, Whitby

Famous for its pies, the clue is in the name, Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash is another much-loved restaurant offering great food and great service.

Another place to pick up a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, the business has received 2,791 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 3,544 reviews altogether.

With the prices ranging from £4 to £7, although some recent reviews have reported a price increase, there is clear value for money here.

One person said: “Visited while in Whitby, was totally worth the visit. You can not book, it’s a first-come first-served basis.

“We waited 25 mins for a table. The pies are cooked to order, which is good for means we had time but if you were in a rush you’d have to rethink.

“Waiter was friendly and was working hard. I didn’t have the mash with my pie but the portion was still ample.

“Both pies ordered were very tasty I had creamy chicken and leek and my hubby had steak and ale. Definitely worth a visit.”

  1. The Windmill Inn, Stainsacre, Whitby

Offering traditional pub food, but with a bit more class, this venue has also grabbed itself a  TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers Choice Award.

According to TripAdvisor, prices range from £8 to £19 and the place has received four-and-a-half stars in most aspects including food, service and value.

With 199 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 273, although the business doesn’t have many ratings, it still offers a great dining experience.

Being a bed and breakfast, you can also stay here for a few nights if you want.

One person said: “After cycling from Ravenscar down the Cinder Track, my partner and I were feeling the need for some proper pub food and a pint.

“The Windmill did not disappoint, although busy and us not booking, they still managed to serve up to two excellent roast beef dinners.

“We sat outside and enjoyed these, the portions were generous, and the food was really beautiful, and also very reasonably priced! We will definitely be returning again when in the area.”

  1. Cosa Nostra, Church Street, Whitby

If you’re looking for a place that does good Italian cuisine then look no further, Cosa Nostra offers a wide range of Italian dishes.

The business has picked up a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award and has scored itself 917 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 1,546 reviews, 370 of which were four stars.

One person said: “Visited with my wife on 5th September. Everything was beautiful. Can’t speak highly enough about the food, both of us thought it was excellent.

“Also the service we received on the night was great. All in all a first-class evening in a lovely setting would highly recommend.”

  1. The Postgate Country Inn

This pub has scored itself four and a half stars on all aspects including food, service, value and atmosphere.

According to reviewers, the place is a “hidden gem” and offers “unbeatable cuisine” for those looking for classic pub grub.

The Postgate Country Inn is another place to pick up a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award and the venue has received 204 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 283 reviews altogether.

One person said: “A hidden gem in Egton Bridge and worthy of the detour, especially if you're in need of a break from Whitby day-trippers with their numerous kids and dogs.

“It was a most relaxing lunch thanks primarily to resident landlord and chef, Mark Powell and his team who provided a faultless service.

“Our family gathering enjoyed first-rate, medium rare roast beef with all the trimmings, followed by some pretty spectacular puds.

“A couple of glasses of Timothy Taylor's award-winning Boltmaker Ale proved a delightful accompaniment. Highly recommended.”

  1. Shepherds Hall Tea Rooms, Whitby

 

Built-in 1873, Shepherds Hall was a meeting place for the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds, according to TripAdvisor.

The building now calls itself “fabulous” tea rooms with a “lovely tea garden and ample parking.”

Shepherds Hall is a great spot if you’re looking for a place with a bit of history, and with prices from £2 to £12.

Scoring itself five stars in all aspects including food, service, value and atmosphere, Shepherds Hall is one of the highest-rated venues on this list.

The business has picked up a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award and has grabbed itself 151 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 181 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Have visited before for a coffee, had lunch this time. Ordered a toasted cheese sandwich and it came on a plate with a lovely coleslaw and salad plus crisps.

“Coffee and service also excellent and the impression is of a well run and managed cafe.

“Not only is it worth popping in if in the village, but it is also worth travelling to the village just to visit Shepherds Hall Tea Room.”
