AMAZON has confirmed new starters at its Darlington warehouse will also receive a £1,000 bonus - weeks after a similar scheme was rolled out at two other sites.

The online retailer, which had previously said new starters would be given a joining bonus at its Durham and Gateshead site, said it would now apply in Darlington.

It comes as further job adverts have appeared with the retailer saying Fulfilment Associates are "urgently needed" ahead of the festive period.

In the adverts for workers in Darlington, it says workers are needed to help pick, pack and dispatch orders to customers, with pay starting at £10 an hour.

A spokesperson for Amazon said: “To support our summer demand and help us prepare for the festive season ahead, we are currently offering at our Darlington site an attendance bonus to permanent associates and a sign on bonus to attract new permanent and seasonal associates.”

Amazon said new starters - including part-time - will be required to have started their role in Darlington before September 25, 2021 in order to receive the bonus.

According to the advert, a mix of temporary and fixed-term contracts are being offered by the online retailer.

The Northern Echo previously revealed how Amazon was set to pay its workers in Durham and Gateshead an additional £50 for turning up every shift, and on time.

However, Amazon this week confirmed this "attendance" bonus would now apply to permanent workers in Darlington too.

The bonus will be paid weekly and is based on 100 percent attendance for all scheduled shifts, excluding any absences under the Equality Act and relating to Covid.

Amazon is not the only firm offering joining bonuses to attract much-needed workers, with firms such as Tesco and Asda offering lorry drivers £1,000 on sign up.

In recent months, firms across the UK have struggled amid a mounting hiring crisis with a shortage of HGV drivers, and hospitality seeing issues with recruitment after lockdown.
