THE MET office have predicted “warmer” temperatures for the North East and North Yorkshire this week as the UK may see an “official” mini heatwave.
Some parts of the UK could see temperatures as high as 30c this week according to forecasters as a possible mini heatwave hits the country.
The weather forecaster has predicted that the country could enjoy sunshine and sweltering heat from Monday and Wednesday this week.
In the North East and North Yorkshire, the mercury is expected to exceed average temperatures in September which is 18c and reach heights of 26c in places.
What is an official heatwave?
A location meets the UK heatwave threshold when it records daily maximum temperature levels for at least three consecutive days, which vary across the country.
These threshold include 25c for central England and Wales, which the forecast has predicted temperatures could exceed this in some areas of the North East and North Yorkshire.
What have the Met Office said?
Annie Shuttleworth, a Met Office forecaster, said: “We are expecting temperatures to rise at the beginning of the new week.
“Sunday will be a cloudy and wetter day for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland while those further south will see bright and sunny conditions with temperatures in the mid-twenties.
“Despite a cloudy start to Monday, conditions will be clear and bright with hot temperatures for large parts of England and eastern Wales as the result of continental air moving in from the south.
“This air will start to push through the country on Tuesday and Wednesday, dragging temperatures as high as 29C (84.2F) for parts of the south-east while Scotland and Northern Ireland will also move into the mid-twenties.
“It’s going to be very warm for the time of year and could even be rather uncomfortable for people trying to sleep at night, with temperatures remaining at around 18C (64.4F) during the evening.”
The Met Office forecast for the North-East and North Yorkshire for Tuesday said: “A fine and dry day on Tuesday, with plenty of sunshine once early mist and fog patches dissipate. Warmer than Monday, though feeling cooler near the coast. Maximum temperature 26 °C.”
The outlook for Wednesday and Friday read: “Dry, sunny and very warm on Wednesday though breezy on hills and coasts. Showers spreading erratically northeastwards overnight to become widespread and occasionally heavy on Thursday and Friday. Less warm”
How likely is an “official” heatwave?
The Met Office have said there is a “decent chance” an official heatwave may hit parts of central England where the temperature threshold needed over three days is 25c.
However, an area of low pressure moving in from the west on Wednesday afternoon may bring grey and wet conditions for much of the UK on Thursday.
Thunderstorms are also expected later in the week after the hot spell has ended.
These are the temperatures from Monday to Wednesday across the North East and North Yorkshire:
Newcastle Upon Tyne: 22c, 23c and 23c
Darlington: 22c, 24c and 23c
Hartlepool: 23c, 20c and 22c
Durham: 22c, 24c and 24c
Northallerton: 23c, 26c and 26c
