For almost 160 years Darlington Market has stood at the centre of the town.
With the market hall undergoing a significant refurbishment, we had a look back through our archive at just a few of the occasions it has featured in our pages.
Many of the pictures date from 2013, when the Northern Echo photographed every single stall on the market as part of efforts to mark the 150th anniversary of the Darlington institution.
But there are many more going back even further, featuring bustling market days, competition winners, MP hopefuls and the day-to-day goings on.
And there are plenty of familiar faces from over the years, with some of the current long-serving traders making regular appearances.
The newly refurbished hall was unveiled yesterday, featuring new street food stalls, seating and a stage area for live music and other entertainment.
Since 2017, the Victorian market hall has been under the management of Market Asset Management. It took over the market with the aim of providing specialist management and investment skills to modernise and develop it for the future.
