THE Tyne Tunnel will soon stop accepting cash payments which has prompted concern and questions from drivers across the region.

Bosses have confirmed that as part of plans to "speed up travel time and reduce congestion," toll booths will be removed and drivers asked to pay online.

On Monday, it emerged that drivers would be able to either set up a pre-paid account, Pay Later online or use cash to settle the fare at a PayPoint retailer.

Drivers from across the North East raised concerns with some highly critical of the move as others raised questions over the planned changes.

But what some may not actually know is that drivers meeting a certain criteria are able to use the Tyne Tunnel for free, and will be able to beyond the changes.

According to the Tyne Tunnel website, those with an exemption are able to use the tunnels for free without making any payment.

It states that drivers with a Blue Badge, or currently have their vehicle exempt from tax due to a disability, are included.

However, the website states that this is not automatic and requires the driver to complete and sign an application form.

It then says that a permit will be posted to the registered address for the driver to display in their windscreen.

It says in cases where someone has applied for a Disability Tax Exemption, the tunnel will add their registration plate to its ANPR system so they do not need a permit.

Addressing the changes and how they will affect disability exemptions, a statement said: "You will continue to receive your exemption.

"Blue Badge/exempt customers are being contacted to migrate from their physical permit to an online account. This will allow customers to drive straight through without stopping."
