BUILDING work is set to start on a new cinema on the site of the former Northallerton prison.
The Everyman Cinema will have four screens with a total of 276 seats, a restaurant and bar. It's the latest phase of the £17m Treadmills site being developed by Hambleton District Council and Wykeland Group
Council leader Mark Robson said: "This is a really exciting day for our district. To announce the build of a new cinema just as we begin to emerge from a global pandemic is quite an achievement, given how hard the cinema and theatre industry has been hit by Covid."
"I am confident the cinema will be a welcome addition and help increase our leisure offer in Northallerton meaning more people can enjoy spending more time in our thriving county town."
An Everyman spokesperson said: "We are pleased to announce that Everyman will be opening soon as part of Northallerton's historic Treadmill's redevelopment.
"We are excited to be sharing our unique brand of carefully curated film, warm hospitality and comfortable setting with the local community."
Everyman, has 35 cinemas with 118 screens across the country and is known for its luxury venues with sofa seats and in screen service. Building work is due to start on site in September with the cinema opening its doors next summer.
