From classic British tea and cake to a café offering decadent chocolate options, North Yorkshire is certainly not short of options when it comes to cafés and tea rooms.

Offerings range in prices from £5 to more expensive venues, but there’s one thing these café and tea rooms have in common – they have all been rated very highly by the public.
The following list contains venues listed as Coffee and Tea businesses who offer quick bites and baked goods.
- The Sugarcube, Church Street, Filey
The first on our list is a little venue in Filey near Scarborough selling homemade cakes of all shapes and sizes.
With a range of friendly dietary options such as vegetarian and vegan options, the little business is sure to get any person’s mouth watering.
The Sugarcube has received five-star score on all aspects such as food, service, value and atmosphere and 309 “excellent” five-star score reviews out of a total of 340 reviews, it’s clear the cakes don’t disappoint.
One person said: “Popped in with the family on our day out in Filey. The homemade cakes were delicious and the service was very friendly, it felt very safe as Covid regulations were in place.
“I highly recommend it.”
- Mocha, Trinity Church Square, Richmond
Mocha is a much-loved café offering “delicious” chocolates, according to reviewers, that are made on site.
The venue has received five-star reviews in a range of aspects such as food, service and value and has received 112 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 127 reviews.
Unfortunately, co-owner to the venue Dennis Graves, very sadly passed away. On social media the business received an uproar of love and support, showing just how loved the business and owners are in the community.

This is definitely a must-visit if you’re ever passing through Richmond.
One person said: “I was visiting Richmond for the first time and came across this shop. I chose a box of nine chocolates from the vast array on offer and was not disappointed.
“If you prefer dark chocolate, I would recommend the Cherry in Kirsch, Bitter Orange and the Stem Ginger all absolutely gorgeous rich tasty chocolates.
“I have one a day with a good quality coffee and had the last one today. I will definitely be looking to order online.”
- The Cocoa Tree, Castlegate, Helmsley
Describing itself as a “small family owned café”, The Cocoa Tree serves a wide range of “light lunch” items, including cakes, waffles, cream teas and snacks.
The description also claims they serve “award winning” ice cream and milkshakes, a good one to look out for on a hot day in Helmsley.
Offering a range of dietary options such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, the café has received five-stars in food and service and four and a half stars in value and atmosphere.
The venue has received 394 “excellent” five star reviews out of a total of 477 reviews all together and has secured itself a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice award.
One person said: “We came across this super cafe while walking around Helmsley and what a fantastic find.
“Very friendly lady who took our order and also the gentleman who brought us our food and drinks.
“The coffee was first class and really hot, not like some places where its lukewarm. We both had a sandwich and my husbands smoked salmon and cream cheese was delicious.
“My ham sandwich was full of good quality ham and they both came with a lovely salad, crisps and homemade coleslaw.
“The homemade cakes looked delicious too but we were full so we will definitely be back to try the cakes.”
- Whitegate Nursery, West Rounton, Northallerton
This bright and airy café brings a much more modern touch to the café seen, while also providing a quality of service that secured it a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.
Offering a range of options from cakes to Sunday lunches, this café can bring a bit more than quick bites to customers.
Whitegate Nursery has received five stars for food and service and 146 “excellent” five star reviews out of a total of 171 reviews all together.

One person said: “We are so pleased to be able to visit again, fantastic staff, well organised, very professional and always high standards.
“Lovely food well presented, the cheesecake is one of the best around. One of our favourite cafes without a doubt!”
- Sandgate Coffee and Delights, Market Place, Whitby
Although it has yet to pick up a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, Sandgate Coffee and Delights is one of the best reviewed cafes on this list.
Offering “wonderful homemade produce” according to one reviewer, this small little bakery is a bunting-filled dream for cake lovers.
Sandgate Coffee and Delights has received five-stars in all aspects including food, service, value and atmosphere.
The venue has received 338 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 363 reviews all together.
One person said: “Having read about the legend of the Whitby Fatty (scone), we had to give this a go.
“The fatties were delicious, as was the Bakewell tart slices (my son says the best ever) and the brownie. Couldn’t sit in as COVID is in full swing but would highly recommend a visit.”
- Love Brew Café, Eastborough, Scarborough
Picking up a travellers choice award, Love Brew Café offers homemade baked goods and quick bites for hungry visitors.
The business has received five-stars in all aspects such as food, service, value and atmosphere, and 245 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 287.
One person said: “This is such a lovely cafe. The food was fabulous. I had a vegan sandwich with jackfruit, vegan cheese and other toppings, my partner had the vegan brunch.

Offering a completely different cuisine all together is Caffe Lago di Como, which offers Italian quick bites.

Going by the pictures provided on TripAdvisor, portion sizes certainly aren’t shy, so bare this in mind if you’re wanting more bang for your buck.
Receiving 170 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 194 reviews it is certainly one to look out for if you’re looking for more exotic cuisine.
One person said: “This is the third time we’ve visited and we keep coming back for more.
“Every time we’ve eaten here, we’ve eaten something different and the food has just been jaw-dropping, explode in your mouth tasty.
“We really can’t recommend it enough.”
- Tea, Toast and Post, King Street, Robin Hoods Bay, North York Moors
Specialising in loose leaf teas, this business describes itself as a “café and gift shop in the heart of Robin Hood’s Bay”
Prices are fair at Tea, Toast and Post at £2 to £5 and reviews are even fairer with the venue receiving 320 “excellent” five star reviews out of 383.
The café also specialises in “Baytown coffee, freshly baked bread, and all things toasted,” and is another place that has picked up a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award.
One person said: “Had a very welcome fish finger sandwich a a cup of tea, which was just what we needed on a blustery November day.
“Only take out available but great staff and great food. Will be back when we can sit inside.
“Felt very safe as the service was at the door and other customers kept to the social distancing guidelines.”
- The Coffee Shop, Grape Lane, Whitby
Described as “a little gem” by one reviewer, this little shop offers all that you would want from a café, so much so that it has also picked up a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.
The Coffee Shop has scored five-stars for food and services and four and a half stars for value and atmosphere.
With 171 “excellent” five-star reviews out of 210 overall reviews this vegan, gluten free and vegetarian friendly venue is a great option for those in the Whitby area.

One person said: “Found this little place by accident, what a little gem, service was super, food was so lovely, we had jacket potatoes with tuna and salad, jackets was so fluffy.
“Staff made us so welcome with our dog. Would recommend to anyone, well worth a visit.”
- Steampuss Cat Lounge, Bar Street, Scarborough
This café offers a bit more of a different experience, not only does it offer “awesome” cakes but you can enjoy them while stroking a cat.
This venue is a must-visit for cat-lovers and reviews agree that the cats are both very friendly and very accustomed to people coming and going.
Picking up a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, the venue is a paw-some place to visit if you’re in the area.
Having received 94 “excellent” five-star reviews out of a total of 100 reviews, it’s not hard to see why.
One person said: “I love cats and I love chocolate cake so to have an experience where the two are combined was perfect!
“All the cats were very relaxed, and obviously well accustomed to being treated like major celebrities.
“I will definitely be booking again but prebooking is essential at this time of year.”
