LIFE Science Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is challenging LEGO fans to build models of iconic North East people, places or things this summer to be in with a chance of winning a one-on-one building workshop in the studio of renowned local LEGO artist Steve Mayes.

The Local LEGO Legends contest is inspired by some of the incredible LEGO creations on display at Life throughout the summer holidays, including Steve’s detailed models of Stephenson’s Rocket locomotive and the Metro – both synonymous with the North East. Life is also exhibiting a collection of new models from LEGO artist Warren Elsmore, with an incredible four-metre-long airport landing in the science centre.

“All over the world, people of all ages are creating amazing bespoke LEGO models covering all themes, it will be wonderful to see what local LEGO fans can come up with to depict our North East icons,” said Steve Mayes. “Whether that’s the Tyne Bridge, a Greggs pasty or Jordan Pickford saving that penalty at the Euros, I can’t wait to see what people come up with.”

The closing date is midday on Wednesday, August 11, and the finalists will be judged on August 18 by Steve Mayes.

Linda Conlon, Life's Chief Executive, said: “I’m looking forward to seeing what people come up with. The LEGO models currently on display at Life are great inspiration to get the creative juices flowing!

“We’re delighted to be back open to the public this summer and there is a fantastic vibe in the science centre, with visitors once again engaging in our fun and interactive exhibits and being inspired to unleash their inner inventor in the newly redesigned Making Studios.”

Alongside the LEGO creations, there are many activities and exhibits to see across the centre. For more creative fun, families can build a wind-powered toy of their own design or explore a world of ingenious inventions with a live science show that is full of bangs and explosions.

The amazing Space Zone, complete with a recreation of part of the International Space Station, is an out-of-this-world experience, which features an Earth observation deck, a real piece of the Moon and even the chance to sit on a space toilet.

There’s still lots to keep the youngest members of the family entertained, including the planetarium show Naughty Monsters in the Sky and pop-up play areas around the centre.

To submit an entry into the Local LEGO Legends, email a picture of your model to competitions@life.org.uk. Full details of the competition and terms and conditions is available at life.org.uk/LEGO-Legends.
