A PORTRAIT of a top Great Britain Olympic diver has been awarded pride of place at his former school in Yorkshire.

The painting of diver Jack Laughter, was created by artist and parent Fiona Scott, and will help students cheer on the past pupil as he competes in Tokyo.

Headmaster Jonathan Webb said he was thrilled to have the oil painting of the Olympic gold medal winner hanging in school.

He said: "Students and staff are all very excited and we’ll all be willing him on.”

Ms Scott who arranged a sitting with Laughter at the Leeds Aquatics Centre after meeting him at RGS sports awards evening, revealed he was delighted to hear the painting is now on show at his old school.

Swimmer Darcy Harper, 15, from Kirkby Felletham was among the students lucky enough to meet the sporting hero when he returned to present prizes pupils three years ago.

She said: "I found it inspiring to hear his story and how far he’s come. It encouraged me to push myself even further.”

Dan Brown was another student who Laughter inspired, and has represented his school in county swimming championships, athletics and tennis.

He said: "His example inspires me to continue working towards my own sporting goals.”

Swimmer and runner Eliza Polito, 14, said: "I think it’s so cool to know that Jack Laugher came to this school and has gone on to achieve so much.”
