TWO North-East football legends joined Lady Elsie Robson in thanking family and friends of an avid Sunderland fan for continuing to raise money in his memory.
Every year, since 2010, Kevin Outhwaite’s loved ones have held a golf day in his memory to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Kevin’s Dad, John, brother, Ian, and nephews, Nathan, Jake and Luke, come together with friends to play golf and to remember him.
Kevin, who was a plumber, was just 36 when he died from skin cancer in 2010, would have been thrilled to know that two Black Cats’ legends were among the supporters of this year’s event.
FA Cup winning captain, Bobby Kerr, and European Golden Boot winner, Kevin Phillips, surprised golfers by attending as guests of Sunderland Fan’s Museum founder, Michael Ganley.
The pair joined Sir Bobby’s widow, Lady Elsie, in thanking the Outhwaite family for their fantastic fundraising in Kevin’s memory.
Bobby Kerr, a director at the Fan’s Museum, said: “What an amazing day we’ve all had and what an amazing event Kevin’s family and friends have created.
“Although my golfing days are behind me, being able to ride around in the buggy meeting everyone was such a joy.”
Kevin Phillips, an ambassador of the Fan’s Museum, added: “We all had an amazing day and I’m very proud we were able to be part of things.”
Andy Oliver, Kevin Outhwaite’s friend, plays a key role in organising the golf day at Ramside Hall, Durham, every year.
He said: “Kev would have been absolutely over the moon knowing Bobby and Kevin had come to his golf day.
"He was a massive Sunderland fan, all the family are.
"Going to the match is one of the times we miss him the most.”
