EVER fancied owning your own Batmobile?
Well here’s your chance as a North Yorkshire auction house has not one, but two, going under the hammer this weekend.
The cars, a Mitsubishi GTO and BMZ Z4, have been transformed beyond all recognition into a vehicle Bruce Wayne himself would be proud to get behind the wheel of.
They’re both going under the hammer at Mathewsons Auctions in Thornton le Dale, Pickering, this Saturday with guide prices in the region of £45,000.
The cars were modified by an enthusiast in Bedfordshire and the owner of Mathewsons Auctions, Derek Mathewson, said they’ve caused quite a stir in village.
He said: “We took one round to the local school and the kids absolutely loved it.
“A lot of them still believe in Batman and I told them he was just in the village having a ham sandwich.
“The seats are a bit worn and I told them that’s because Batman has to get in and out of the car so quickly; they loved it.
“The teacher asked me to social distance, but the kids just kept getting closer and closer to the car, as they do, because they were just so excited by it.”
Mr Mathewson admitted he didn’t expect the cars to sell this weekend, having only been on the auction house’s books since last week, but he did have one suggestion for their future owner; David Beckham.
He said: “It’s one for those big name types who’ve got everything, someone like David Beckham, well they might think they have everything, but do they have a Batmobile?
“Put one of these in the doorway of your car collection and everybody will be stopping to look at it.”
Mr Mathewson, who has been in the auctioneering business for 50-years, says he has seen a lot of unusual vehicles over the decades, but having two Batmobiles on his books at the same time is certainly a first for him.
He said: “It is so rare, it will never happen again.
“You never find one of these, so to see two for sale it certainly pretty rare and it will be interesting to see what happens.
And he couldn’t resist getting behind the wheel himself and treating the villagers of Thornton le Dale to a glimpse of the Dark Knight’s crime-fighting car.
“I have been around the village in it and it’s great,” he said. “It just drives like a normal BMW because that’s what it is; it’s great.
“Some people might laugh and take the mick out of them, but what this guy has done is incredible and I’d say to them ‘could you turn a Mitsubishi GTO into a Batmobile?’
“They’re really well done, forget Picasso, this guy is an artist.”
The cars will also feature on an upcoming new series of the TV show Bangers & Cash.
