THOUSANDS of Covid cases have been reported by councils across the region in the past week - as one area has seen 1,418 in seven days.
Most recent figures for the North East and North Yorkshire show how cases have surged in some areas as all 14 local authorities have reported a rise.
It comes as the new Health Secretary Sajid Javid is set to make a statement on the latest Covid situation in the UK later today.

The figures, which show the picture in the seven days to June 22, compared with the previous seven days, has also shown cases soar in County Durham and Darlington.
In County Durham, a total of 1,418 cases were reported last week - up by 627 from the week before, pushing its infection rate from 149.2 cases per 1,000 people to 267.5.
Meanwhile in Darlington, a total of 237 cases were reported - up by 158 from the previous seven days, pushing the infection rate from 74.0 to 221.9.
Across the region, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Sunderland and Northumberland have recorded among the highest cases with almost 2,800 cases last week between them.
The stark figures are reflected nationally as other parts of the UK are also seeing cases rise sharply as more data becomes available.
According to the Government's website, the North East currently has the country's second-highest Covid infection rate with 210.6 cases per 100,000 people.
This is only beaten by the figures in the North West which are somewhat higher with the infection rate now at 265.6 cases per 100,000 there.
Earlier today, Sajid Javid was urged by health bosses to be the “voice of caution” in the Cabinet, as a scientist advising the Government warned it would be a “definite mistake” to bring forward the lifting of restrictions.
NHS Confederation chief executive Matthew Taylor told the BBC: “Covid is the most pressing issue, the number of cases in hospital are rising.
“Covid is an issue and he needs to be a voice of caution in the Cabinet in terms of the potential pressures in the health service.”
Meanwhile Professor Peter Openshaw, a member of the Nervtag from Imperial College London, said it would be a “definite mistake” to bring the easing of restrictions forward from July 19.
