THE sentencing date for a young motorist, blamed for causing the death of his passenger by the manner of his driving, is to be fixed next month.
Cameron Holdsworth, of Beechwood Road, Fishburn, County Durham, admitted causing the death of Hannah Jane Inman by dangerous driving at Newcastle Crown Court, in February.
She was the front seat passenger in Holdsworth’s Skoda Fabia which was in collision with a tanker on Coniston Road, Blyth, Northumberland, at 8.20pm on October 1, 2019.
Both she and Holdsworth, then aged 22, were badly injured in the crash, but 21-year-old Ms Inman was declared dead at hospital.
Holdsworth, now 24, was warned to expect a significant prison sentence after he admitted responsibility at the hearing in February.
When he returned for the scheduled sentencing hearing, in May, Judge Christopher Prince apologised to both families present, but said he wanted the police to investigate if Holdsworth was engaging in organised drag-type racing and its prevalence.
He said evidence in the case suggests Holdsworth was among ten drivers heading for a drag-type race on the night of the fatal accident.
No new sentencing hearing has yet been agreed, so Judge Prince has asked all parties in the case to attend court on July 22 to fix a date.
