How did the players fare in England's 1-0 win over Austria at the Riverside Stadium?
ENGLAND (4-2-3-1):
7 Pickford: Made a superb second-half save to claw Sabitzer’s shot onto the bar, but caused a nervous moment in stoppage time
5 Alexander-Arnold: Wasn’t his usual exuberant self down the right and ended the evening hobbling down the tunnel
6 Coady: Wasn’t really extended at the heart of the back four – will face much stiffer tests if remaining in the team
5 Mings: Was fortunate that the referee failed to spot his blatant body check on Freidl in the first half
6 Trippier: Proved his versatility after being asked to switch to the left – could be even more important if Alexander-Arnold is forced out
6 Rice: Held things together effectively in front of the back four and has become a very important member of the team
6 Bellingham: Can be pleased with his first international start – it is crazy to think that he is still just 17
6 Lingard: Hasn’t sulked since being cut from the squad, and did well in the first half before his influence began to wane
7 Grealish: Spent most of the first half being fouled – his willingness to run at defenders is a major asset
8 SAKA: Took his chance to impress with both hands and claimed his first international goal with a clinical strike
6 Kane: Didn’t have a lot of opportunities, but led the line with his usual enthusiasm and intelligent running
Subs:
5 Ward-Prowse (for Rice, 61): Didn’t have a lot of opportunities to showcase his talents in the final half-hour
4 Godfrey (for Mings, 61): Almost had a nightmare England debut when he nearly put through his net within seconds of being on the field
5 Watkins (for Lingard, 61): Showed plenty of enthusiasm, but wasn’t really a factor
5 Calvert-Lewin (for Kane, 61): Made a couple of decent breaks, but didn’t threaten to score
White (for Grealish, 71)
(not used): Johnstone (gk), Ramsdale (gk), Phillips, Henderson, Sancho.
AUSTRIA (3-5-2):
Bachmann 6; Dragovic 5, Hinteregger 5, Friedl 4; Lainer 4 (Trimmel 81), Baumgartner 6 (Schaub 61, 5), Laimer 5 (Grillitsch 61, 5), Schlager 5 (Baumgartlinger 81), Alaba 5 (Schopf 71); SABITZER 7, Kalajdzic 5 (Gregoritsch 71).
Subs (not used): Schlager (gk), Pervan (gk), Ulmer, Posch, Ilsanker, Lienhart.
Man Of The Match: BUKAYO SAKA – The Arsenal forward enhanced his chances of playing a prominent role at the Euros as he claimed his first England goal.
