THE latest Covid infection rates reveal where in the North-East and North Yorkshire cases have gone up and down as a new variant causes concern amongst politicians and health experts.

The latest Covid infection rates across the North-East and North Yorkshire have been released by each postcode area, with the most up to date information showing case rates for the seven days to May 7.

It shows four areas in the North-East with rolling rates higher than 100, which is above average: Nunsmoor, Newcastle, (127), Ayresome (113.8) and Beechwood & James Cook (158.3), both in Middlesbrough, and Thornaby South in Stockton (151.5).

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population.

Where there are fewer than three cases, data is suppressed.

It comes as customers of a popular Tyneside bar have been asked to take a Covid-19 test after a case of the Indian variant was linked to the premises.

Anyone who visited Allard’s Lounge in Tynemouth between April 23 and May 3 has been urged to book a PCR test.

Public Health England and North Tyneside Council said “one of the cases in an outbreak linked to the premises has been identified as having the Indian variant”.

Meanwhile, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) will hold a meeting today over the concerning rise in cases of the Covid-19 Indian variant.

The meeting could have huge ramifications in the UK as scientists fear the rise of the variant could delay Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown.

A member of Sage said a “delay is possible” to the UK’s plans to end lockdown, with restrictions due to ease again on Monday, May 17.

Asked about concerns over the Indian variant circulating in the UK, the Prime Minister said: “It is a variant of concern, we are anxious about it.”

Speaking at a primary school in Ferryhill, County Durham, Boris Johnson said: “At the moment there is a very wide range of scientific opinion about what could happen.

“We want to make sure we take all the prudential, cautious steps now that we could take, so there are meetings going on today to consider exactly what we need to do.

“There is a range of things we could do, we are ruling nothing out.”
