Northern Echo reader Tony Marshall shares some splendid photographs that he has discovered in his family's archive.
Park Lane
Mr Marshall’s father was a police officer in the North Riding Constabulary and the family moved moved around the county quite a bit. Mr Marshall Sr began his police service as a cadet in Guisborough, just before the Second World War.
There is a general shot of Park Lane, where the Marshall family lived when Tony was born, with the fire station on the right. There is another photograph of the police station – you can tell it is wartime by the substantial blast wall in front of the central entrance.
The police station
Mr Marshall Sr no doubt had some tales to tell of his Second World War experiences because the heavy industry around Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland was bombed almost nightly, and often accidentally, by German aircraft from their bases in Norway.
The Marshall family also lived in Scarborough. Above is a view from the castle steps looking down to the harbour
Other photos in the family archive include the demolition of the old blast furnaces at Skinningrove iron and Steel works at Carlin How, near Loftus, below.
After his retirement from the police Mr Marshall Sr worked as a safety officer at the works.
Fylingdales Early Warning Station, before the changes. It was always a ‘look for sight’ on the
drive from Whitby to Scarborough or Pickering
