A DOG owner was hurt when a stranger attempted to snatch their pet during an early evening walk.
North Yorkshire Police are investigating the attempted dog theft which happened in Pickering, at about 7.15pm yesterday (Monday, March 1).
The owner was walking in Pluntrain Dale Lane when an unknown male approached, attempted to snatch the dog from them and left them with minor injuries.
Officers have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward and urged dog walkers to be vigilant.
A force spokeperson said: "A large number of police resources were deployed to the area following the report and enquiries are ongoing.
"If anyone has any information or has witnessed any suspect vehicles or person(s) around the area please call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident 12210069450.
"Alternatively please email the OIC Chris.Hudson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk."
The incident comes as dog owners report an increase in dog thefts and attempted thefts.
Durham Constabulary has urged victims to contact them about offences as the number of incidents reported on social media does not match the figures passed to them.
