AN application has been submitted to vary the restrictions that were imposed on a unit taken up by Darlington’s first Company Shop.

Part of the retail site off Haughton Road, Darlington, has been developed by Company Shop, the UK’s largest commercial re-distributor of surplus products, which handles about 81 million items each year, of which 23,500 tonnes are food.

Everything in the store is either branded or is from a major retailer and is deemed “surplus” due to either packaging or ingredients inconsistencies. The members-only shop opened on the site on February 5.

A previous planning application granted by Darlingotn Borough Council was subject to the condition that the smaller unit on the site, occupied by Company Shop, would be restricted to selling food and drink.

However, the applicant argues that because the store was previously owned by Netto, before being taken over by Asda in 2011, some items such as toiletries may have been sold on the site.

The current application seeks to vary the restrictions imposed by the first application, allowing Company Shop to sell food, clothing and toiletries.
