SCORES of villagers turned out to say farewell to the man who was headteacher of their local primary school for 23 years today.

Harry Moses, 90, died on January 30 just six weeks after his wife of 66 years, Audrey, had passed away.

Mr Moses, originally from Tow Law, became headteacher of Aycliffe Village Primary School in 1970 and the funeral cortege slowed as it passed the school gates at lunchtime on the way to the crematorium.

Because of Covid restrictions, the funeral was a private ceremony, but scores of people in socially distanced groups were all the way along the main street in the village as the cortege went by.

Mr Moses was also known as the Durham Light Infantry’s historian, having written many books about its battalions and their service from the Crimea in the 1850s to Korea in the 1950s. He specialised in the two world wars, taking battlefield tours as well as giving talks.

He was also a founder member of the Aycliffe local history society.
