REDCAR seafront is currently closed off after parts of the Beacon blew off due to the weather.

Jacob Young MP for Redcar, posted on Facebook: "Redcar seafront is closed due to a storm.

"Storm Darcy has damaged part of the Beacon and therefore the Esplanade is closed in that area to make it safe.

"Most people should be staying at home, but if you’re out today, please be careful."

A spokesperson from Redcar & Cleveland Council said: "Safety is always the priority and we can confirm that the area The Beacon on Redcar seafront – including the road – was closed as soon as we became aware of panels coming loose in high winds this morning. The area will not reopen until our officers are assured the area is safe and that is likely to be tomorrow when the winds have dropped.

"Builders and contractors who constructed the building have been on site all day and will continue with their investigations tomorrow, into what caused the panels to come loose – and how it can be prevented from happening again – as soon as is safe."

It has been reported parts of the purple cladding on the exterior of the vertical pier on the Esplanade have been pictured coming away from the structure.
