A DATE has been set for the closure of Durham Bus Station to allow for demolition and redevelopment work to begin.
The facility closes on Monday February 15, after which a range of new bus stops will be introduced on North Road and at Milburngate.
The outdated facility will be replaced with a new spacious transport hub built, designed to increase the overall space for passengers in a light and airy setting.
There will also be improved facilities, such as increased toilet provision, including parent and child and a changing facility, as well as increased seating and space in the passenger circulation and waiting areas.
Investment in the new station is part of Durham County Council's plans to support the county in its economic recovery following the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.
Temporary bus stops will available on North Road and Milburngate, with the stops being available for passengers to use while work is ongoing.
Construction is due to start in spring 2021 with the completed building open to the public by Summer 2022.
Durham county councillor and City of Durham parish councillor Richard Ormerod, who represents Elvet and Gilesgate, said: "We've waited a long time for this to happen.
"Working with the council we managed to secure a green wall and solar panels. We will have a building which is safer, greener, more attractive and more user-friendly than the old one."
Go North East has released details of the temporary bus stops.
