THE online retailer Amazon is recruiting for apprentices to work at its Durham and Darlington sites - with jobs already live.
The retailer has launched its drive to recruit more than 1,000 full-time apprenticeships across the UK with dozens of roles available in the region.
The firm, which has 'Fulfilment Centres' at Symmetry Park in Darlington and the Integra 61 Industrial Estate in Bowburn, Durham, is offering 25 different types of apprenticeships.
From schemes working in engineering and broadcast production to degree-level apprenticeships, Amazon is urging people of all ages to come forward.
The roles begin at £9.70 per hour, with degree-level apprenticeships paying up to £30,000 per year.
According to Amazon, the scheme last year attracted recruits from a range of backgrounds including former military veterans, baristas and photographers.
It also said those from construction, customer services, healthcare, hospitality and sales industries had joined the firm.
In the North-East, 35-year-old Andrew Monaso retrained after working as a marketing manager.
Mr Monaso, who now works as a team leader at Amazon Durham, started as an 'associate' before progressing onto his role following an apprenticeship.
He said: “Amazon has provided me with a great work/life balance and the apprenticeship means I’m able to progress both professionally and academically.
"I’ve learned so much during my time at Amazon, and if I had to pick just one thing that really sticks out, I’d say the most important thing is no matter how good you are, it all depends on the team. Teamwork is everything.”
Meanwhile set to work at Amazon Darlington, 30-year-old Joe Murray is studying an advanced mechatronics apprenticeship.
Mr Murray, who was made redundant after working in the offshore industry for almost ten years, is completing his ten-month course at MTC in Coventry.
He said: “This apprenticeship gives me a lot more opportunities than working offshore. It has provided me with more job security, so it’s exciting to be part of it."
"I’m excited to continue progressing my career with Amazon," he added.
Across the UK, more than 500 of the apprenticeships will be offered to workers internally, with some routes offered "exclusively" to internal staff.
Graham Allison, Regional Director at Amazon, said: “An Amazon apprenticeship offers an exciting career path, creating opportunities within our local communities in the North-East and helping our own employees retrain and gain new skills at a time when investing in people and jobs has never been more important.”
