A HUGE cruise ship has arrived into the North-East - and it's almost three times the size the Titanic was.

P&O's Azura was spotted sailing on the River Tyne on Friday morning as dozens gathered to watch the huge ship dock at the Port of Tyne.

The ship, which can accommodate up to 3,100 passengers and 1,250 crew, weighs a staggering 115,055 tonnes.

But although not the biggest cruise ship in the world, it is enormous compared to the Titanic which weighed just over 46,000 tonnes.

But it is not quite as big as the largest cruise ship ever to be built, the Symphony of the Seas which weighs 228,081 tonnes and can hold 8,880 passengers and crew. 

P&O has confirmed that the Azura is not operating as a cruise ship, rather it has been moved to the region for essential maintenance.

A spokesperson said: "Our home port of Southampton does not have berth availability for all our ships at the moment.

"As a result, to enable essential maintenance to be undertaken, Azura will be berthed in the Port of Tyne as part of our ongoing preparations to return to service."
